Snip, clip?

If you've been reading this blog awhile, you know that Zoodle's hair has had a life of its own.

There's always been plenty of it.

And for a few months, his cowlicks took over. I loved his 'do during this time.

Then his hair decided to lay down and behave somewhat normally. How boring.

Throughout the months I've had people suggest that it's time to cut his hair. I've always reacted with horror. Cut this fabulous, perfect head of hair on my perfect little baby? Not yet! But recently I've started to think it may be time.

From the front he still looks cute. I mean, shaggy is in for boys anyway, and I don't mind it down over his ears.

But in the back he's looking a little too, well, 1980s. (Note that when he's upright and isn't leaning his head back, his hair doesn't look this long--but it does still curl down over his collar.)

So I am considering just trimming up the back. Any thoughts? Do I (deep breath) give my 7 1/2-month-old his first big boy haircut? Or let it grow and prepare myself to correct all the people who may start thinking he's a girl?

Go for it! I had to do that with both my kids. Their hair was so uneven in the back. I chose tub-tim. I would twist a bit of baby hair, face them the other way, and snip into my hand.

I'd leave it until you're ready to give him a big bog haircut at the barber shop. I LOVE seeing those pictures of little babies sitting in the barber chair getting their first haircut! - just not the same when Mommy's holding the scissors! Besides, hair in the back doesn't get in his eyes, so who cares?

my vw: alerstur - definition: a baby boy who gets his hair cut too soon. :)

Super cute photos! Looks like such a happy kid. I would trim the back a little only if it REALLY bothers you.

My son has the biggest cowlick in the world, I think. We call it "The Poof." When it gets longer, he just has this ring of hair that stands up and everything else is flat. It looks so ridiculous that we keep his hair pretty short.

He is so adorable! I would leave the hair long for awhile...very trendy!

I know Grammy wants to see the cute barbershop photos, but I have to say ... am I the only one who thought "mullet" when I saw that pic from the side?

Maybe a bit off the back, and then when he's ready to get a full-head haircut, you can take him to the barber and take pictures of it. :)

P.S. It is very cute and trendy from the front! Dye it brown, and he could be the baby Jonas brother. Do the little girls in the church nursery swoon?

P.P.S. I just looked at the title of this blog entry, and it brought to mind a much more permanent to-snip-or-not-to-snip decision! At least you can go halfway with this one! :D

I didn't get my son's hair cut until he was 2 or 3 - his is copper-red and was quite shirley-temple-curley when he was young. Now, he's 12 and prefers a buzz cut. Go figure. Vikki www.thorntonwilliamsfamily.blogspot.com

I thought mullet too....business in the front-party in the back!

I like the long in the front but I think the back might need a trim.

Awww...cute kid!

I laughed out loud when I saw that first pictures. That is priceless! You can't make this baby any cuter, so you just have to decide what bothers you and what doesn't. He's not going to care! :)

Wow your boy has such a lovely mane:) You can leave the hair long for some more time..they really suit him :)

Hey, check out my latest post Wacky Inventions!!!. I value all of your comments:)

Those pics are too cute! The Manimal was the same way, his hair was so curly and long. I finally broke down at 11 months, when one too many people told me how cute "she" was!

Leave it long for a little while longer. My boy had beautiful blonde hair when he was a baby, I didn't cut it until he was 18 months. I saved the clipping of his first cut and just found it the other day. (He is 20 years old now!) I am so glad that I let it grow while he was little.

Those are all so CUTE! Luke had WILD hair too! I gave in and got it cut at 7 months. There is a great place not too far from me. Email me if you want to know.
He is precious with any style!

Definitely cut it. I've had to cut 2 of my 4 childrens' hair by 6-8 mos (the boy was one of them). It won't make much of a difference in cuteness, but will probably keep the "boy or girl?" comments from being quite so frequent.

I wanted to add that I am for trimming just the back (around his neck/collar), not all over. I like the shaggy look.

I gave P a million haircuts before he got the actual "first haircut" at the barbershop.

You know I actually wish I've gone to beauty school so maybe I was manifesting that in my son....

My suggestion: Just do a little trim in the back to even things up.

Maybe a ponytail, or a braid ala Willie Nelson? :-)

Natalie has a few strands of hair in the front that are getting in her eyes, and I'm struggling with the same decision. I feel like I'm cutting off her "original" hair, and along with it, part of her babyhood. I think before too long, I'm going to have to go for it and just trim that one section.

Trim it if it bothers you... no one is gonna notice if you mess up and it will grow so fast that you wont remember what it looked like. I trimmed Sara's bangs for the first time a couple months ago and HATED it. She was not the same baby anymore, but then it started to grow out and started to grow on me. I am so glad I trimmed it. (Oh, and I dont consider a trim like that a first hair cut. When it gets so long that you wouldnt be able to trim it yourself and still have it look decent is when the "first" cut at the barbershop comes in).

P.S. Cutting the hair will not ward off the wrong gender comments. I have had people say "he" or "boy" when my girls were all in pink.

I know others have said it, but I can't resist - Zoodle's got a mullet! :) lol. These photos are so cute. I really love the first one. What a fantastically cute expression.

Wow! Zoodle has WAY more hair than Beth does! How fair is that? I say cut it and send it this way for the hair extensions Beth needs!

On the other hand, Beth likes her men with long hair, so maybe you should keep it as is. ;)

I say leave it be. My 20 months old has crazy hair too. She has had to look under her bangs at us for months because she would not wear a clippy and pulled out bands(plus a lot of hair). Did I mention they grew straight forward? But now she has figured out she can push it back and they are almost long enough to tuck behind her ear. And she looks so darned cute pushing it back with her chubby little hands..
