Double-teamed

As I posted last night, the CT scan showed that Chickie's head is okay--yay!  However, I'm not sure that I'll ever recover.  The sedation process with Chickie was pretty rough.

The sedative was a bitter liquid, and our wonderful nurse Karen and I had to hold Chickie down while Karen squirted the icky stuff in her mouth.  The nice thing about a screaming child is that at least her mouth is, by default, open!

Once she got drowsy, Chickie decided to fight sleep with all her strength (which is considerably more Hulk-like than I'd realized.)  There's nothing like laying in a narrow radiology bed with a three-year old who is flailing her heavy limbs and head, and spouting half-sedated nonsense.

When she fell asleep and had the scan, I figured the hard part was over.  I didn't realize how tough it would be to take care of her in her post-sedated state.  I picked up Zoodle from our friends' house, and we headed home, where I was on my own since The Engineer was on a business trip.

Chickie was acting like a drunk.  Under the influence of a depressant drug, I tried to prevent her from running into walls, falling into coffee tables, and (later in the evening) using her wobbly legs to jump off the arm of the couch.  Add a sleepy 11-month-old into the mix, and it's enough to make Mommy wish she'd been the one sedated.

I do have to admit that toddlers "under the influence" can be pretty darn funny.  It was just impossible to appreciate that when I was overwhlemed and outnumbered.

So I have a new parenting rule to shout from the mountaintops:  If you ever come home with a sedated kid, make sure you're playing one-on-one defense.  It's pretty hard to win when you're being double-teamed by a baby and a drunk.

bARE-eYED sUN--Yes, these things are very funny...in retrospect. :-D I'm sure it's something I'll talk about for years.

Anna--I don't know about you but it gives me incentive to REALLY try to keep her from having an alcohol problem in the future!!

Barga--HA!!!!! Unfortunately, no, I don't. But it would be funny.

Oh my gosh!! How awful! But thanks for the warning! I hated to laugh at this, but it sounds like you had the right attitude the entire time.. more than half the battle.

And I'm freaked out that my toddler might need 60 secs of sedation if he has to get tubes! yikes!

Knowing what a handful I am after sedation, I can just imagine trying to care with a toddler. Plus a Zoodle. I'm glad you all survived the day!

Glad Chickie is ok! I am sorry you had to do that by yourself! DD had to go "under" completely for dental work for over an hour. It took him an hour to wake up from and for a few hours he too was "drunk". It is super scary, super strange and kinda funny :) But I had my helpmate man to be there. I wouldn't have wanted to be alone...too bad you can't time things like this!

I once fastened a pillow on my daughters( 14 months old) stomach when she was under the influence of albeterol for breathing ( they realy should couple that with valium for mom) She was repeatedely running into the tv and the stairwell in a n attempt to dance to Barney!! She bounced easier with the pillow!!
