Lemurs and toads and boas, oh my!

Yesterday the kids, Little Sis (the teenager I mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters), and I went to a large zoo in a city about 100 miles away. It was a long day, and a very good one. It felt like April, not January--a great day to be outside. Here are a few highlights.

Little Sis took this photo of a gorgeous bald eagle. Reviewing the pictures she took today I was really impressed with her eye for photo composition. I need to encourage her to develop (no pun intended) that talent further.

Photobucket

It's hard to tell how big this python is without anything to compare him to--but let's just say it looked like he'd eaten more than his fair share of rabbits. He was by far the biggest snake at the zoo, and I found him fascinating. (And no, I'm not sure it was a male--but if it was a female, she's certainly lost her girlish figure.)

Photobucket

The most stunning sight for Little Sis and me was two huge hippos, swimming in front of us in a massive tank. These animals are just stunning in their size and swimming ability...really awe-inspiring.

Photobucket

Considering I have a relatively inexpensive digital camera with plenty of lag time between pushing the button and taking the shot, getting a neat photo like this requires lots of luck. Thank you, pink flamingo, for spreading your wings for me!

Photobucket

Little Sis took a picture of Chickie and me that I just love.

Photobucket

As Chickie and I were using the restroom, she made it abundantly clear that she didn't like the odor of a frequently-used zoo bathroom. When we got back outside, it was easy to convince her to replicate her "stinky face."

Photobucket

Too bad she has trouble expressing her feelings with that inscrutable face, huh?

Love the flamingos, and the pictures of you and Chickie. But the picture of disgust is priceless! That would be a good one to do a caption contest for!

I could not possibly count the number of photos of my and friends' and family's children I have taken. However I don't think I've ever taken one so wonderfully expressive as the last photo on this posting. I think it's brilliant!

Love this post and that delightfully expressive last picture is priceless.

No pandas, huh? Hippos are pretty awesome though. The picture of you and Chickie is definitely one to cherish and her stinky face is fantastic. I'm so glad you had such a nice day together at the zoo.

I agree, your little sis has a great eye. That's a really well-balanced photo. You should encourage her to take a photography class.

And I'm mad you could wear short sleeves - a TANK TOP in Chickie's case - in January! Grr!

Hilarious face Chickie! Great pictures:) I am so jealous that it is warm where you live! We had freezing rain this morning:(

Looks like a fun day! Can I just say how jealous I am, that you are in short sleeves in your pictures? Here, it's not even up to 0 degrees yet today at 11:00 a.m.

By the way, seeing your new header reminded me again that you were nice enough to offer to make one for me. I can't seem to get my act together enough to figure out what I want, so I'm going to hold off for now - but thank you! Someday, I'll remodel my blog. Probably around the time I get around to remodeling my house. :-D

Your heading promised Lemurs - I'm all hurt and upset! But the photo of you and Chickie is cute enough for me to let you off!

Stunning photo of the bald eagle - very majestic pose. Love the look on Chickie's face - cracks me up! Saw the same look on my little girl's face the other day when our dog went "poopy" during a walk.

Sandra--Caption contest--great idea! How is your vacation going?

Graham--Now, THAT is a compliment, and it made my day! Thank you!

Laura Jayne--I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I was trying to make it more interesting than just a "Look at our zoo pictures" post. :)

Call Me Cate--You know, I don't think there are any pandas at that zoo. :( But the hippos--WOW.

Becki--And the eagle photo is the only one on this post I didn't crop. She really did do a great job.

Michelle--Well, after the warm day yesterday I made the mistake of wearing a very lightweight cotton dress today, with sandals. Went outside to get in the car for church, and was greeted with temps in the 40s and a biting wind. Aargh, winter has returned!

Becky--No problem; if you ever do decide you want another header, you know where to find me! :)

The Gentle Lemur--I am so sorry for that deep disappointment! ;) If you are reading this, e-mail me at cbethblog (at) gmail (dot) com and I'll send you the photo of a lemur that we took. It was cool. :)

A.--Yeah, I hadn't been to a zoo since I was a kid. That was a long time ago. :) It was great!

Dina--Aren't their little faces just hilarious as they learn all those expressions (from US!)? Love it!

Laurel--Thank you, I just love that photo too!!

Little Sis does have a great eye. The composition in that picture is wonderful. You really should encourage her to develop that talent. The picture of Chickie is brilliant! A picture really does say a thousand words ... or smells, as the case may be.

Wow! Great pics. Love the face at the end. Can fully relate to her feelings on that matter. Hee hee. Sure wish it was warmer here. Have a massive snow storm heading in that is suppose to dump 2-8" on us. :( We do need the moisture though. So need to be thankful. Can't wait to take the grand kids to the zoo. Glad you all were able to have some fun in the sun!

Great shots! That's so cool you still do the Big Sis/Little Sis even though you have two little ones. You are certainly providing your little ones with a great role model!

Just love these photos! Classic!

And I just love hippos!

And you continue to amaze me with what you seem to be able to do. Blog pretty much daily. Have two kids. Cook and make salads (I remember that post). Do the 1 Minute Writer with about a gazillion posts and pick a winner each day. And be a Big Sister? How do you do this??????

Jenners--How? Well, I only see my Little Sis about once a month these days.

And right now my bathtub is really gross. :)

Yay, they're up!! :)

Your descriptions had me on the floor laughing (almost literally)! That snake better get on that diet again to regain her youthful, girlish figure! I love Chickie's "stinky face" :P
