Stinky mommy

My running is teaching my kids several things.
  • Exercise can be fun.
  • Meeting goals is rewarding.
  • Sweat makes you stinky.
Yep, they've started noticing that when I get home from running, sometimes I can be...well...pungent. And they delight in pointing it out. But it's going a little too far.

"Mommy," Zoodle said when I got home this morning, "Are you sweaty?"

I confirmed that I was indeed sweaty. From the other room, Chickie heard us, and came in, holding her nose.

"Chickie, that's rude," I said.

From 20 feet away, she said, "Mommy, you need to take a bath."

"Stop that, Chickie," I said. "You can't even smell me from over there."

"Yes I can!" she insisted, still holding her nose.

By then I was genuinely annoyed. "No," I insisted, "you can't. And it's really rude to do that."

Sure, Chickie should feel that our home is a safe place to be honest.

But I should also feel that our home is a safe place to stink...at least for a little while!

I think it's an age-thing.... hopefully!?! Because when I came home this morning, Coqui asked me the same question: "Are you sweaty, Mami?" So I confirmed that and he kept asking "Why?". When I said that I went running and running makes you sweaty, he asked if I am going to take a shower now. Well, that was a nicer hint of me smelling too much, I guess....

We kind of embrace stinkiness in our house. When I come home from a run- I stink. When Daddy's been working in the yard, he stinks. Heck, we openly talk about stinky poop. Stink happens- and it's usually a bi-prodct of something positive.

If it's any consolation, I didn't smell you from where I am. Of course, I seem to have a bit of a cold in my nose.

See, the trouble with kids is that for the first 8 or 10 years, whatever they are thinking just spills right out of their mouths....no matter what the subject, no matter who is there, no matter how rude or thoughtless or even hurtful they can inadvertently be.

Just be glad they were at home, and speaking only to you! Someday one of them (actually probably both of them in turn) is going to pick a much more public and populated place to let go of the most embarrassing thing you've ever heard and it will be directed to the worst possible person to say it to! I can just about guarantee it.

Courage, you only have to survive for another few years then they will finally learn self-control. After all, why do you think so many moms get grey hair??
