On Twitter yesterday, Call Me Cate said, "I think if I ever have a kid or get a new pet, I'm gonna let you name him/her/it. You come up w cool names. #HammerChickieZoodle."
Well, I had to admit that I didn't come up with the name Hammer. In fact, while Chickie and Zoodle are, of course, not my kids' real names, Hammer is my dog's real name.
Before we had kids, our first dog had to be put to sleep, and we quickly wanted to get another. We contacted a Schnauzer rescue organization, and they put us in touch with a military family that needed to get rid of their (freakishly large) Miniature Schnauzer, since they were planning to move and couldn't keep him at their new location.
We got in touch with them. They told us the dog's name was Hammer. We didn't really care for the name, but figured if we took him, we'd let him keep it; he was over a year old, and we didn't want to change his name.
So we went to meet him, and asked this Marine family why they'd named him Hammer.
"Well," they replied, "his full name is Hammer of Justice." Wow. We decided to lose the last 2/3 of his name and stick with the short version.
So here he is--Hammer, formerly Hammer of Justice. Our crazy, hyper, currently shaggy dog.

Wow, such a strong name for such a smallish dog. I figured Hammer must be some big creature. In fact, I had pictured a bloodhound of some sort.
But THIS is the dog that did all the damage on your run earlier this week? Huh.
I still think Hammer is a cool name. When we got Rusty, we changed his name but I think there's far less "issue" with kitties than dogs. Doesn't matter what you call a cat, they won't pay any attention anyways.
I love your dogs name. Although I think I would have called him Justice. When I was pregnant with Ian we decided to "name" him something goofy to mess with our parents. We decided that name would be Justice. Best part was that my mother-in-law actually liked it and our plan to freak her out was foiled. Now my kid will be forever nicknamed Justice, or Captain Justice as my mom likes to call him at times.
What a great story - perhaps we should all blog how our pets got their names it would make a great set of posts!
Doesn't matter if his name is Hammer or Nail or Shoo-Fly Pie, this is one Adorable dog!! How old is he??
Actually, now you need another dog that you could name Bell, as in Bell of Freedom. And if this all makes no sense to you, ask your Dad or somebody lots older than you. (Or even me if you strike out!)
That's great! I love hearing how pets get their names. And he's adorable too. Very funny to hear he's freakishly large for a minature. He must be a sight to see.

He is adorable! I might have switched from Hammer to Justice. But my dogs always end up with some sort of identity crisis- not only do I give them too many nicknames, I also end up getting confused and calling my kids by the dog's name and the dog by the kids' names!
Hammer of Justice is awesome and made me literally LOL. Hammer works much better!
