I caught a freezer!

Remember that old prank call?

"Hi, is your refrigerator running?"

"Uh, yes...."

"Then you'd better go catch it!" Preteen hangs up as quickly as possible, but not before the person answering the phone hears peals of laughter from at least six other kids listening in on the call. Ah, the days before Caller ID....

Well, I haven't "caught" the exact fridge I'd like, but this week I did "catch" something I've wanted for awhile--a standalone freezer for my garage.

Before the baby shower last week, here is what the freezer in my side-by-side fridge
looked like:

I have a great example of how this packed freezer has been insufficient: Some time ago I bought some cheap ice pop molds--you know, to make your own Popsicle-type treats. I used 100% juice in them, for a healthy snack for the kids (and sometimes for me.) Well, somehow after using them a couple of times, I could not find them. Until I began to find pieces of clear and colored plastic...in my ice. There hadn't been room for the ice pops anywhere but in the icemaker tray, and so I'd stuck them there "temporarily." I forgot about them, and they were covered with new ice and eventually were chopped up through the gears of the dispenser. Oops.

So... here is my new appliance:

It has an LED number on the outside with the current temp. It will sound an alarm if the temperature goes too high, or the door is left open. There is a "soft freeze" section in case I want something like ice cream to be at a slightly higher temp. It's 20.6 cubic feet of zero-degree goodness. My kitchen appliance-loving heart is doing flips of joy!

No longer do I have to look at a 400-pound bag of vegetables at Costco and think, "Hmm, will it fit?" I won't ever have to wonder what I'll have to kick out of the freezer to make room for a lasagna. And never again will I find bits of plastic in my ice.

I caught a new freezer!

Very nice. The old freezer looked like a safety hazard. I could just imagine poor Chickie pulling out a lemonade and the entire freezer collapsing on her sweet little head.

Congratulations.

Did the shop sell it empty? That's very inconsiderate of them!

God bless.

I'm impressed that you were able to cram that much stuff into your old freezer. We are in desperate need of a freezer too.

We are in phase 2 of our big plan to get a freezer. First we had to buy a garden shed to make room in the garage. Then we had to wait for the weather to cooperate for us to build the shed. Then the swine flu overtook my family for a couple weeks. So we still need to find some free time to clean out the garage, so we can finally buy a freezer. Who knew it would be such an ordeal!

Your freezer looks great! Eventually, I'll be able to know what it feels like to buy a big giant bag of something and not have to spend 5 minutes creatively arranging everything to make it fit.

I give it six months.

The universal law of freezers (as with so many other things) is that stuff will expand to fill the space available. In six months, you'll have filled the new freezer, and then you'll have to start thinking "will it fit?" again.

Trust me. I have two freezers, and I've over-filled them both.....

So very beautiful.
I had a stand a lone freezer. It now holds all of my baking pans, sheets, pie pans, loaf pans, etc. With only 2 of us in the house I no longer buy in bulk.

Oh man I need something like that. Some day, stand-alone freezer. Some day.

Beth, I had to laugh at your ice pop story. One day I stuck a spoon in our ice tray to help de-puff my eyes. I totally forgot until one day Billy started pulling shards of shaved metal out of his mouth! I felt so bad! At least he can laugh about it now. We will have a 2nd side-by-side for the garage soon. I can totally relate to your excitement!
